Why My Havanese Dog Is Our Perfect Family Pet

Havanese Perfect Family Pet

Today many families are scouring the Internet to find the perfect dog for their family, and mine happened to be one of them. We searched all over the internet for the perfect dog. We searched for dogs that are good with kids and families and dogs that also fit our lifestyle. We found dogs ranging from the large and calm Newfoundland to the energetic Pit Bull. Whether you can handle a big dog, a small one, a hyper or calm one all depends on your personal preference and your lifestyle. In this post I’m going to lay out 5 reasons why you might take a Havanese into serious consideration.

About two years ago, my family and I adopted our wonderful Havanese, Trapper. Here are 5 traits or reasons why we consider him the “perfect” dog breed for us.

But First: What is a Havanese?

The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba. He is descended from the now-extinct Blanquito de la Habana (“little white dog of Havana”); the Blanquito descended from the Bichon Tenerife, which is also now extinct. Once nearly extinct on his home island, this little cousin of the Bichon Frise, the Maltese and the Coton de Tulear has a popularity that has grown well beyond his fan base in Little Havana.[1]

Reason 1: Adaptable
Havanese are very adaptable to their new homes. Being quiet, low energy, fairly calm indoors, and polite, makes them able do well in anything from an apartment to a farm. They just need all the loving care that they can get. All they want is to be by your side at all times.

Reason 2: Great for Novice Owners
Is this your first dog? Great! The Havanese is eager to please and a quick learner, making them very easy to train. Havanese are also very patient with their people, meaning, they’re okay if you don’t know what you’re doing!

Reason 3: Companion
They have earned the nickname “Velcro Dogs” because they stick so closely to their owner’s side. Because of their quiet and laid back nature, they are very gentle around babies and small children. The Havanese, because they are very attached and loyal to their owners, can suffer from separation anxiety.

Reason 4: Hypoallergenic
The Havanese have won many hearts with their long, silky, fur-like hair. We affectionately call it “Flair” or Fluffy-Hair. Because of the hair-like traits of the Havanese’s fur, these pups are hypoallergenic. But their hair also has fur-like qualities, making their coats very soft and fluffy. (We enjoy styling his hair in fun ways.) They can come in many colors and patterns, ranging from black to tobacco to mahogany. Our Trapper has a black and white pattern along with little white eyebrows! We give Trapper regular haircuts ourselves. See the video link below.

Reason 5: Laid Back but Not Lazy
Don’t assume that they are JUST lap dogs. The Havanese is trainable, energetic and excels in dog sports, ranging from dock diving to assisting the handicapped. Trapper loves to perform. You can tell he has ‘show dog’ in his genes.

Thanks for reading about my Trapper. By the way, Trapper is our company mascot so you’ll be seeing him around the Blessing by Design store! Please comment if you have any more questions about owning a Havanese.

I love creating dog caricatures so much that I created ways for you to get a caricature or pop art of your pet on lots of different products. The gallery images below are just some of the t-shirts I sell in our Got A Cute Pet? collection. Check out the Got A Cute Pet? collection on my store.

Be blessed,
Rinne
